Computer Monitors
Monitor, also known as computer display or screen, is a computer equipment used in displaying varieties of images. The system works through a computer graphics card. At present, the liquid crystal display or LCD (a.k.a. flat panel or flat screen) is now slowly replacing the cathode ray tube (CRT) because of the former's slick design and lower energy use. Aside from these two machineries, other monitor systems include the plasma display and the video projector.
The usual resolution, or the monitor's graphical dots, is stated in horizontal (rows) and vertical axis (columns). Its typical display include the XGA (Extended Graphics Array) with 1024x768 resolution, SXGA (Super XGA) with 1280x1024 resolution, UXGA (Ultra XGA) with 1600x1200 resolution, QXGA (Quad XGA) with 2048x1536 resolution, WXGA (Wide XGA) in 1280x800 resolution, WSXGA+ (Wide SXGA plus) with resolution, and the WUXGA (Wide Ultra XGA) with 1920x1200 resolution. These standards are applicable to CRT and LCD monitors. However, native LCD resolutions have its own formats depending on its viewing angel. The 17 inch LCD monitor, for example, has a resolution of 1024x768; the 19 inch has 1280x1024; and the 20 inch has 1600x1200. Aside from the viewing angle, other LCD features include the brightness, contrast ratio, response rate, and the adjustability.
CRT monitor has its own kind of attributes. These are the shadow-mask, aperture-grill, slot-mask, dot pitch, refresh rate, and the multiple resolutions. The advantages of CRT monitors over the LCD are its lesser price, color representation, response mechanism, and fragility (LCDs are more delicate to handle).
According to Howstufworks.com, the top three most profitable monitors are the ViewSonic VX924 (Silver, Black) 19 inch LCD Monitor, Samsung SyncMaster 204T (Silver) 20.1 inch LCD Monitor, and the ViewSonic VA902b (Black) 19 inch LCD Monitor.
Among the world's foremost monitor manufacturers include LG, Philips, ViewSonic, Iiyama Corporation, Sony, NEC/Mitsubishi, and Samsung.
